Formation Fighting

Formation fighting was an intrinsic part of medieval warfare. It was important because sometimes it allowed smaller forces to defeat larger ones.

Formations are not simply about battalions of soldiers being in nice pretty shapes. There are huge benefits to putting soldiers in formation as a formation describes the role you wish your soldiers to perform. Formations also allow the soldiers in them to share experience and injury.

The relationship between formations is one of the keys to success. For example, your formations of archers can defend pikemen against the enemy, and will maintain this relationship even during the heat of battle.

Economy & Resources

An army marches on its stomach and if you are going to succeed you will have alot of mouths to feed. Warrior Kings has three types of resource - food, wood & stone, and metal. All three are important and you'll need to manage them carefully to keep your army's supply lines open and your soldiers fed, clothed and most importantly, armed to the teeth and hungry for victory.

Combined Arms

The tactical use of combined arms is an integral part of Warrior Kings. You must use the right combination of units for the action you are undertaking. Throwing vast numbers of units at individual targets in a simple attempt to overwhelm them will probably not work - you must think before you act. Considered violence is the key.

For example, it is pointless to send a Knight to attack a wall - a man in heavy armour is not well-suited to scaling a sheer vertical. A mounted knight is perfect for eviscerating some enemy infantry, but to attack a walled city you will of course need siege engines.

Races

On the path to victory there is an important step: you must choose a race. Will you be Pagan, Renaissance or Imperial? Each has its own strengths and weaknesses.

Will you be Imperial and follow a rigid monotheism, building upon the power of the church to call down Acts of God upon your heretical foes, or will you embrace the Pagan side and summon mighty creatures from the spirit world to take the battle to your enemies and enslave them? Or will you reject those paths and choose Renaissance science and logic, placing your faith in technology and gunpowder?
