Profile

Tropico is a strategy game with plenty of political overtones and a lot of humour. It's about making friends and influencing people, as it turns out your people. Your job is to try and make them happy and productive or failing that, to repress the hell out of them so they are too frightened to complain.

Set in the 1950s, bang in the middle of the Cold War, when small Caribbean islands were fought over as if they were Vegas Showgirls. Tropico is a poverty-ridden statelet waiting for a charismatic leader to haul it to prosperity and greatness. That's where you come in.

Unfortunately the dictator business is tougher than it looks - you never have quite as much clout as you really want. You have to make sure the various factions which exist on Tropico are played off against each other, leaving little ol' you holding the balance of power. Of course you don't have to keep all of the people happy all of the time… a bracing dose of repression can come in very handy every now and then and besides, where's the fun in being a nice guy all the time?

Your island's inhabitants are fleshed out individuals, most of whom support you as their leader (at least initially). They go about their daily business striving for happiness under your enlightened rule. They have homes, jobs and identities, and they like being safe, well-fed, employed and spiritually enriched. Plan your growth well, and you'll have plenty of money to buy their favour.

The game contains a huge number of structures to build, from hotels and spas for tourists to rum distilleries and bauxite mines. Industry, mining, agriculture, or tourism, you choose to shape the economy to your vision. But remember not to let your lust for Yanqui dollars overcome your concern for the plight of your people or they may end up giving you a painful lesson in revolutionary justice.

So what are you waiting for? Presidenté, your people await…
