This game is complex. So complex, in fact, that a reviewer could write 10,000 words and still not cover all there is to know in sufficient detail.

Those who enjoy Civilization, Caesar 3, The Sims or other games in which pacing is gradual and thought is encouraged will likely connect strongly with Black and White's measured tempo which encourages exploration and thought over adrenaline and reflexes.

Black and White is a treasure and it's example will hopefully shape how games get made from now on.

Inside Mac Games  (8.25/10)

The intelligence system for the creature and its level of interaction with the rest of the world is incredible. The much-lauded creatures of Black & White deserve every ounce of praise and hype they receive.

Completely submerged in the experience more than once, I gained an attachment to the my creature and my villagers that I couldn't really explain beyond claiming that I have a basic capacity to be concerned for my fellow being.

I routinely lost track of the time while playing Black & White. "Just one more minute" usually turned into hours.

Like your treatment of the game's little people, you can be cruel to your creature or nice to it. The former will make your creature evil, while the latter will make him good.

As your creature gets older, he will become more autonomous, which means that he may strike out on his own and eat some villagers, or perhaps help them, depending on his disposition.

PC Press Reviews

Praise for Black & White has been forthright and unanimous. Reviewers have all had to keep their book of superlatives to hand when writing these:

PC Gameplay (UK)  (10/10)
There is so much amazing stuff in this game we honestly can't do it justice on four meagre pages.
PC Plus (UK)  (10/10)
There are good games. There are great games. And there are a few that sit on a higher pedestal. Deus Ex. System Shock. X-com. Half-life. The elite of the gaming world that lesser titles look up to with adoration. We can now add another…
EDGE (UK)  (9/10)
Black & White is a colossal achievement. Original but approachable, diverse but coherent, drop-dead gorgeous but deep, and above all obscenely entertaining.
PC Player (Denmark)  (10/10)
A game like Black & White goes straight to the heaven and almost further! This game is the best one ever seen on your monitor.
Incite PC Games (Denmark)  (9/10)
Black & White is one of the five most revolutionary games ever. Every gamer with a minimum of fantasy gets sucked into the world. You're warned!

"Black & White" miraculously pulls you in and doesn't let go until you've sacrificed many hours.

The wonderfully addictive gameplay, and small touches such as the ability to publish the stats of your creature on a webpage, make this game a must-buy for any gamer who even remotely likes RTS games.
Game Addicts  (96%)
The graphics in Black & White are simply breathtaking. From the villages to the miracles to the land of Eden - it's eye candy like you've never seen before.
Gamespot UK  (90%)
Black & White is the first game in years to have the "wow" factor. It's the Matrix of gaming in the sense that we have seen these ideas before, but never with so much style, and never in one game.
Gamespot US  (93%)
Black & White is huge. It looks and sounds stunning, and its combination of gameplay elements and game mechanics is completely unique.
Game Guru  (5/5)
Awesome gameplay, Intelligent creature, Unrivaled detail and Great story.

Taken as a literary work, Black & White fits into a distinctly British sub-genre best exemplified by the works of authors such as C.S. Lewis and J.R.R Tolkien (and to a lesser extent, J.K. Rowling) who create fully-realized fantasy worlds that embody the human spirit. Err… yeah, whatever!
